How Do You Choose the Right Wood for a Sauna Room?

You pick the right stove, but the wrong wood. The sauna still fails: warping, resin bleed, burned skin, harsh smell.

Choose sauna wood by matching type to use. Red cedar suits high-end dry saunas[^1], hemlock fits infrared rooms, spruce serves Finnish tradition, and aspen works for sensitive users. But board thickness, moisture level, and grade matter more than the species name[^1].

Every seller says their wood is best. Cedar sellers bash hemlock. Basswood sellers stomp on spruce. I will not take sides here. I lay out the real pros and cons of four main woods. You choose by budget and use.

Which Wood Facts Should You Compare First?

Sellers hide weak points behind marketing. You need one clean chart to see the truth.

Compare five things: stability under heat, smell, color, resin risk, and cost. Red cedar leads in stability and looks. Hemlock stays neutral in smell. Spruce is the Finnish standard. Aspen brings no resin and a light look.

Is Western Red Cedar Worth the High Price?

Cedar costs the most. Buyers ask me if the price is fair or just hype.

Cedar is worth it for high-end and outdoor saunas[^2]. It resists moisture and warping better than most woods[^2]. But do not overpay just for the smell, since aroma fades and some people find it harsh.

The Real Strengths and Traps

Cedar has natural oils. These oils fight rot and insects[^3]. That makes it a top pick for outdoor saunas. The red-brown grain also looks premium. Many people say this smell is "the true sauna smell." But I warn my clients about two things. First, the aroma weakens over the years[^4]. Second, some people react to cedar's phenol compounds. They feel the smell is harsh or get skin irritation. High-end does not mean right for everyone.

Cedar quality also varies a lot. Slow-growth cedar from Vancouver Island differs from fast-growth cedar in density and color. Cheap "cedar saunas" often use scrap or mixed grades. When you buy cedar, ask for the origin and grade. Ask for PEFC or FSC certification papers. I always tell buyers: demand documents, not spoken promises.

Is Hemlock Really a Low-End Wood?

High-end sellers call hemlock cheap and weak. Buyers hear this and get scared. The claim is only half true.

Hemlock is not bad wood[^3]. Thin hemlock is bad product. With boards 12–15mm thick and moisture at 8–10%[^5], hemlock performs very well in infrared saunas. It has no smell and no resin.

Why the Bad Reputation Is Wrong

Some sellers push high-price woods. They label hemlock as "low-end." I disagree. Hemlock has no smell and no resin[^6]. That helps people who react to scent. It has even grain and a soft yellow-brown color that matches any style. Its stability depends on board thickness and drying, not the species.

The "warps easily" complaint is real, but only for thin boards under 10mm that were not kiln-dried well. The same wood, cut at 12–15mm and dried right, works great in infrared rooms. Infrared saunas run at only 50–65°C, so the wood faces less stress. Hemlock is the main choice for mid-range infrared saunas. One line to remember: look at thickness and moisture, not the species snobbery.

Why Do Finns Use Spruce and Aspen?

People copy Finnish saunas but ignore what Finns actually use. That gap causes bad choices.

Finns use spruce because slow-growth Nordic spruce has even density[^4], stable supply, and fair cost. They use aspen for benches because it holds no resin and stays cool. Both fit real Finnish tradition.

Some sellers call spruce "low-end." Yet spruce is the top wood in real Finnish saunas[^7]. Finns never see knots as flaws. But spruce has a real weak point. Knots can bleed resin under high heat. That resin sticks to skin and burns. So pick clear-grade spruce for benches, or use another wood there. Thermo spruce fixes this[^5]. Heat treatment boosts stability, blocks resin, and gives an even light-brown color[^8]. It costs more but suits commercial use.
